Clapton did not begin earnest practice on the guitar until a few years later. Initially, he based his steady playing on blues albums as well. Clapton was well on his way to prominence after he mastered the guitar.

Clapton joined the Yardbirds when he was only 18 years old, in 1963. Clapton established a name for himself among the bluesy rockers who were popular at the time. Despite this, the young musician’s proclivity for canceling gigs to fix broken guitar strings earned him the moniker “Slowhand” from the spectators, who initiated a slow handclap in anticipation of his arrival.
